Our story

Ghana's own spirit, in good glass.

Ghana has always had its own spirit. It is drunk widely, but it is rarely served. It gets poured from unmarked bottles, with no name on the glass and no telling where it came from or who made it.

Mezcal was a village liquor once. Then somebody put it in good glass, named the village and said who made it. The spirit itself didn't change. What people would pay for it did.

The Old Ridge exists for one reason: to make Ghanaians proud to pour their own spirit for the people they want to impress.

We name everything

Every botanical is on the bottle, and so is the place. Each batch and bottle number is printed on the front.

Honest scarcity

There are fifty bottles because we made fifty bottles. When a batch is gone, it is gone.

The hand shows

Every bottle is filled, corked and labelled by hand, and the gift tags are written by hand too.

Ghana without the costume

The ridge, the mesewa, the cocoa. You'll find the Ghanaian part inside the bottle, not printed on the wrapping.

The name

Why ‘The Old Ridge’

The name comes from the Kwahu Plateau, the raised southern edge of the Volta basin. It runs about 260 km from Wenchi to Koforidua and forms the backbone of southern Ghana. It is the country's main watershed, and on it sits Abetifi, the highest town in Ghana.

The mountain on every label stands for that ridge. It is where the spirit comes from.

How it's made

Nine weeks, start to finish.

There's no shortcut. Each batch steeps for nine weeks whether anyone is watching or not.

  1. Weeks 1–7

    The long steep

The heritage spirit goes into glass vessels with the slow botanicals: mesewa, cinnamon bark, cocoa nibs and Mena's Special Blend. Then it's sealed and left in the dark.

  2. Weeks 8–9

    The delicate finish

Ginger, star anise and coffee go in late so they stay bright, not bitter. We taste every day from here on.

  3. Week 9

    Blend and measure

Honey is stirred into The Cinna. Every expression is measured and brought to strength, so the ABV on the label is the ABV we measured.

  4. Bottling day

    By hand

We filter in three stages until it runs clear. Then each bottle is filled, corked and given its numbered label.

  5. One more week

    Rest, then delivery

The bottles rest upright for a week. Then they go to the people who reserved them.

Gifting

Made to be given.

Brown kraft, jute twine and a hang tag with FOR and FROM lines you fill in by hand. The money went into the bottle, not the box.

Wrapped

Included

Every bottle comes wrapped in kraft paper, tied with twine and given a numbered hang tag.

Boxed

Wrapped, then packed in a kraft gift box with wood-wool. Good for corporate gifts, couriers and flights.

The Trio

One of each expression in a three-bottle kraft box. There are only ten Cinna and ten Kakao, so there can only be ten Trios.

Questions

Good to know.

What is a Ghanaian heritage spirit?

Our base is Ghana's own traditional pot-distilled spirit, selected and filtered. We steep it for nine weeks with whole botanicals, then measure and adjust it to the strength printed on the label.

What does the bottle number mean?

Each batch is fifty bottles: thirty Classic, ten Cinna and ten Kakao. The number on your label says which one you have, for example 7 of 30, and it's printed rather than hand-written so it can't be wrong.

How do I pay?

Once we confirm your reservation on WhatsApp, a 50% deposit reserves your bottle numbers and the balance is paid before delivery. We'll send payment details directly.

Do you deliver?

Yes. We hand-deliver where we can and arrange delivery elsewhere in Ghana. Ask us about your area when you reserve.

Can I take it abroad?

Yes. We recommend the Boxed presentation for travel. Check your airline's and destination's rules on carrying spirits.

How should I store it?

Upright, out of direct sun and somewhere cool.
